Tax deadline day

Our company happens to be in the same building as an HMRC office.

We've just been advised that all the entrance doors into the building will be locked at 5:00 pm sharp, we have to leave by a manned fire-escape door, and additional security guards will be arranged to protect us from members of the public who miss the 5pm deadline. FFS!

So why can't they just post it through the letter box.

There isn't a 5pm deadline.

It's "if in in their letter box when it is opened tomorrow morning". (And what's more, HMG actually went to court to try to prove that it wasn't this - and lost).

And there's no penalty to pay if it's a day later!

Maybe this particular building doesn't have an externally-accessible letter box, and the only way you can post stuff is by handing it in to reception, having first entered the building.

True, but why the aggro with shutting the door at 5:00, if that isn't the nominal deadline.

If there are people in the building to accept these things, they should do so
