Trivia: Britain's most broken law is?

I mean a proper law with proper consequences, not breach of copyright or 34mph in a 30mph zone, a proper actionable law that people break knowingly and in large numbers.

Here's my contribution

The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001

?a law that seem designed to be broken, not particularly by naive teenagers buying black and silver plates for their blacked out Fiestas or using squiggly writing on non-reflective plates to try and fool speed cameras, but ordinary law-abiding middle class 4x4 drivers.

Why?

Fred at Fred's Coachworks (motto: "You bend ?em, we mend ?em") is proud of his snazzy logo but when you've shunted your Toyota into a stationary object the last thing you want to be reminded of when you look at it (and moreso when you are looking at it and trying to sell it!) is that damage!

So you order a number plate (this sentence doesn't actually make sense)?you order a number plate with nothing on it but the registration number.

Yeah, they have to have the name and postcode of whoever made the plate displayed in small text at the bottom centre along with the British Standards kitemark, and they have to use the approved typeface to conform to BSAU145D.....

They are allowed to add a coloured border around the outside of the plate, and a small graphic at the left hand end of the plate (normally a blue block with a flag or something similar in it).....

I only know this because I built a website a few years back for a guy in Ipswich who makes custom plates....

I vote for the Price Marking Order 2004, particularly:-

Decimal places and rounding of unit prices

  1. Where the unit price of a product falls below 1 it shall be expressed to the nearest 0.1p. Where the figure denoting one hundredths of one penny in the unit price is 5 or higher, it shall be rounded up and where it is 4 or lower it shall be rounded down.

----

So you may not price something 99p, you must price it 99.0p, in other words expressed to the tenth of a penny.

By law a number plate needs to have a certain amount of information - the minimum I see is a name, postcode and a BS number.

The alternative is to ask for the repairs without a plate and purchase them separately, and bill to the insurance company.

Incidentally my dad had his car serviced at a local Hyundai garage and it came back with new plates with the dealer's name on it. I don't think he complained, I would have!

Yeah but they don't breach that one knowingly do they? I can't imagine the penalty is very much, moving COM 1C so it says COM1C cops you (in theory) £1,000 fine and confiscation of the registration number.

One for the feminists.

Sexual Offences Act 1956 sections 2 and 3.

  1. It is an offence for a person to procure [means "persuade"] a woman by threats or intimidation to have sexual intercourse
  2. It is an offence for a person to procure a woman by false pretences or false representations to have sexual intercourse

How about underage drinking.

Is there anyone out there who hasn't broken that one?

Me. Though I've managed to catch up since turning eighteen. In fact, due to excellent Scottish genes, I may be in the lead by now.

theft- everybody has stolen something even if it's a pencil, paperclip from the office, it may be trivial but it's still theft

The graphic at the left hand side can only be the EU ring of stars and the letters 'GB':

"The Government announced on 28 December 2001 the intention to permit the display of national flags and national identifiers on vehicle number plates. The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 are in the process of being amended. They will provide for the voluntary display of the Union flag, Scottish Saltire, Cross of St George and Red Dragon. Football team crests etc are not allowed."

Implies that national flags aren't yet allowed (but I see plenty about)

Or after hours drinking? Millions of people do this every single day.

What law does that break? (Assuming one conceals one's 'person' with his hand.)

The false pretence being the promise of undying love?

Or what did you have in mind?

Since five is the minimum age for drinking, 18 would be well slack.
