POS makes my computer run Horrible

I purchased a brand new Dell computer and Microsoft POS. The program ran fine at first except for an error message I recieve every time I start it. For the last month or so it has been running so slow. To the point where I have to hand write receipts for the customers because it takes 5 minutes for the item they are buying to show up in the screen. I asked Microsoft about this and got no help. They assumed I was illiterate when it comes to computers and gave me basic steps to improving computer performance. It's not the computer, it's the program.

Also, I heard something about some extra disk I should have recieved for compatability?

Is anyone else having these problems or know why I am?

Microsoft POS uses MSDE, the desktop version of SQL server, which is very disk intensive. Disks would be the first area I would look. Whilst Dells are very good value for money, most of their desktop range do not have the fastest of disks.

I'd start by checking the following:-

1) Check the current HDD is setup correctly, including DMA settings 2) Check the database isn't 'growing' due to a lack of backup (a common problem) 3) If 1 and 2 prove fruitless, look at a 2nd fast HDD for MSDE.

I would check your disk space on drive c:\. The log file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data can grow and consume the entire hard drive space. If this is the case, you will need to detach the database and shrink the log file then reattach only the mdb file. If you need the query for this, I can provide it. Just make sure you do a backup before detaching. Also the default RMS administrator account is ID 1 password is template.

Khopek,

Here's a post I made to someone else about the password problem with POS;

You will need to contact either your reseller or ask MS for the Password Reset Tool. Its part of a MS POS support package. MS is at (888)477-7877 or (888)400-4266.. You may qualify for a free Business-down issue, check out this link;

As far as your slowness, the first thing I would look at is what's running on your system. For starters, right click on you taskbar | TaskManager | Processes tab | double click on the CPU column header and see what programs say on top. System Idle Process should usually be there with about a 95-98. Watch it for a minute or so and see what goes to the top.

Then go to Options menu and select Hide when Minimized and when you close it, a graph will be displayed in the bottom right. When the system gets slow again, look to see if the graph has almost completely turned green. That means that some program is using all of the cycles the CPU has to give. Open it up, go to processes, double on the CPU header and look what the program name is.

Also, how mush RAM is in the computer? If you don't know, go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | General tab, very last line.

System Idle process stayed on top at 98-99 percent the entire time. I have

512 RAM and still have 30 Gigs available > I would check your disk space on drive c:\. The log file C:\Program
