Adding Broadband to POS and Backoffice Computer System

Does anyone have experience with adding a Broadband connection (in this case Cable Modem) to a small LAN (Back office and POS Computers only)?

Our two machines have a network connection where the two fixed IP addresses are entered and they communicate fine. When adding a simple Linksys router (I removed the crossover cable) I note that it routes the traffic between the machines fine, but I cannot "see" the RMC Cable Modem without changing the Network connections to Automatic IP selection. Then of course the POS computer cannot connect with the Database in the Back Office Computer. Do I need to have a Cable Modem with a static IP address or what?

The Charter people have been here and things seemed to work well...until a RMS system restart on the next day...as we shut of computers down each evening. After that, I have to reenter the Fixed IP addresses for the POS system to work again...and then we cannot "see" the cable Modem again... :-(

Any help appreciated,,

Joe,

In your IP address setup screen, change the default gateway and the primary DNS to the router's IP address.

For most Linksys routers, its 192.168.1.1

Call reseller he or she can fix that in a jiff. Well worth money to get things done right the first time.
