Regretting my upgrade from QS2000 to RMS...why I hate M$

I have used Quicksell 2000 for over 6 years and had no complaints. After six years of sales, items, etc., my Access DB couldn't take it any longer and crashed again. I called the MS Support(less) and was told QS2000 support was officially over and they could not repair my DB, as they have done a few times since they bought QS2000. Fine, I will upgrade to the latest/"greatest" so that I am up with the times and also can pay for support when/if I need it.

I have a 3 lane dongle, but only use 1 lane, and was told I HAD to upgrade to an equivilent dongle...fine...sell me the 3 lane. So, less than TWO months ago I bought the RMS v1.3. The install/upgrade was painless and we were up and running in a couple of hours...ah...life is good.

Last week life turned bad. We discovered that when we made changes to items (over 10,000 items in our db) if we opened up another item(s)...the price change carried over. After searching this newsgroup, I learned that this problem was actually a known bug that was fixed in version 1.3.1.003. Well, wouldn't you know it, my BRAND NEW purchase of RMS is 1.3.1.002. Fine, I will call M$ and get the update.

After waiting on hold for several minutes and then someone taking my name and number...I finally spoke with someone in Support(less). The guy told me that yes, this is a bug that was fixed, but they don't keep the CDs up-to-date with the latest fixes. In order for me to get the fix, I have to buy a support plan. Ok, not a problem...how much would that be? Well, come to find out, for my 3 lane version...that plan is $650!!!!!

My problem with this whole thing. I just bought the program and it is flawed...it is flawed to the point that we loose money because the program changes the price of items on its own. Wouldn't you think that Microsoft would not require you to spend more money to get a fix to their broken product? Heck, hotfixes are free for their Windows...why do I have to pay for the RMS hotfixes. I can certainly see paying for a major update, but to pay for a hotfix is STUPID!!!

So, anyone that wouldn't mind sending me the hotfix to my BRAND NEW purchase, can do so at snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com and I will be grateful.

Thanks, Tony

I never got the info from the guy...he wasn't very interested in giving me the info. However, I have now learned that I need at least the .003 hotfix. I believe that is KB921575

Thanks, Tony

"robert> whats the hotfix reference number that M$ told you?

months after your purchase?

remember it was $500 per lane to upgrade, you could have purchased a NEW copy of RMS, 1 lane, for less. ($1190 retail + 214 maintenance)

Jeff,

All I want is a functioning copy of RMS. I am not interested in any of the upcoming stuff, reports, etc. Is it too much to ask for the hotfixes that were available prior to my purchase? Are you seeing my point here? MS knew the CD I was getting was flawed and should at least let me have the hotfixes that were available for 1.3R prior to Sept 15th, to have a functioning product.

I may be wrong as I won't sell RMS without the maintenance plan, but my understanding is that you are entitled to the most recent version that was available at the time of your order. You should be able to get this from the reseller that sold you the upgrade.

MS keeps it quiet, but you can downgrade your license from 3 to 1 and just buy maintenance for the new count. If you needed a second or third register in the future, you would have to upgrade back to that license count at full price though...

I agree with you that the update policy on this product is crazy. Too many of the "Hot Fixes" are really "Bug Fixes". I can understand only giving new features to those on the maintenance plan, but bug fixes should be more easily available. I think the problem is that they can't release a bug fix without also releasing all of the new features. Anyway, the policy isn't going to be changing, so we all have to decide how to deal with it.

To get any of the hotfixes you do not have to pay for either a maintenace contract or a support incident. The support receptionist will take your credit card number once a support technicial realizes you problem is fixed via a hotfix you will not be charged anything. Unlike Windows, Office and all the classic Microsoft packages RMS is still a very small chunk in the Microsoft radar. They want to keep record of who is getting the hotfix to be able to determine if someone that previously got a hotfix now has a new problem. As it always happens in software programming sometimes a fix will "break" something else. In troubleshooting a problem it is always easier to make sure that the last fixed installed is not the one causing the new problem. If you buy a maintenance plan you will get all the benefits that Jeff pointed out before but you will get to upgrade to 2.0.

However advised you on your upgrade either did not ask you how many lanes you needed or did not know what they where doing. QS2000 came in 1,3,9,19 lanes, RMS is sold by the lane so you could have upgraded to any number of lanes. My advice get yourself a RMS Partner with experience and check their customer references. Remember most partners are out there day to day dealing with many odd issues, sometimes we have more knowledge that someone at tech support that is only going on on what problems have been reported. Sometimes you will find your answer in one of these forums.
