Can't reliably open files / Multiuser mode / Vista

Two computers running Vista. One computer has the Quickbooks company files - we'll call that the "server". Another computer needs access - we'll call that the "client".

There are TWO company files that are in use. They are both in the same folder on the "server". We'll call these CF#1 and CF#2.

Both computers and both files are set up to run in multiuser mode. The Quickbooks program to scan the folder for multiuser files has been run.

However: It appears that the client can always open CF#2. But, sometimes the client cannot open CF#1 and gets a message suggesting that the file is set for multiuser mode but there's a communication problem between the computers - firewall, etc. If that were the case then the other CF wouldn't open either, would it?

It may be that if CF#1 is opened on the client first, then the server QB can get access as well. But, if CF#1 is opened on QB on the server then it's not accessible by the client???? This is subject to further confirmation but I add it just in case it suggests something useful.

How to resolve this?

It seems that occasionally Vista sleeps a mapped network drive for no rhyme or reason. Or that is what I suspect is the issue on one setup I use which gives similar errors.

We aren't using mapped drives in this case. Just point QB to the file on the network. What's strange is that both company files are in the same folder and the normal "error" message is that QB can tell that the file is multiuser but that there's a "communication" sort of problem such as a firewall. And, the other company file does not exhibit this problem.
