Got a installation message that intuit will not support QB2008 pro without XP sp2 installed.
SP2 trashes my computer ....constant reboots on startup.
Anyone have experience with an installation with just SP1 on XP pro ?

I would suggest getting your computer fixed unless you have net problems and SP2 isn't downloading correctly.
I agree with this statement. There are too many security updates that require SP2 to be installed.
It might just be a case of getting your hard drive reformated and starting over again.
So, startup in safe mode and watch the screen. Examine the Event Viewer and start-up log.
There are literally hundreds of millions of XP-SP2 installations running without the trouble you describe.
Also, visit the "microsoft.public.windowsxp.general" newsgroup (on the msnews.microsoft.com news server) to get your computer sorted out.
