Abbott split - ABT & ABBV

When I downloaded my Schwab account today, I received the "new security" for ABBVIE.

Had forgot about the Abbott Labs pending split.

What was interesting, at least for my Schwab account in Q2012, was that the symbol ABBV was created, but Quicken didn't really populate it with any received shares even though my Schwab online account shows 200 shrs.

Interestingly, the Schwab "history" screen has nothing about any ABT or ABBV activity.

We'll have to see how things shake out in the next couple of days with the official details of the spinoff, cost basis calc, etc...

ok... it's been awhile since I've done a Spinoff - and my Schwab download merely issued a - Shares Added - which totally messed up the cost basis for the original ABT.

Abbott created new spinoff - ABBV -

my rough numbers... Old ABT = $65.50 New ABT = $32.30 with new ABBV = $34.26

So, what goes where in the Quicken "Spinoff" transaction screen to create the new company and retain the old with an adjusted cost basis ?

Security Name New Company New Shares Issued Cost per old share Cost per new share

I use Quicken Mac 2007, so the fields sound slightly different than what you mention above. The security name is likely the Original Security (Abbott), New Company is obviously AbbVie (ABBV). New shares issued is same as your existing # of Abbott since it was 1:1 spin-off. Cost per old share is the closing price of Abbott on the day of the spin off (I used 1/2/13 so $32.05), and cost per new share is closing price of AbbVie on the same day ($35.12).

yeah, it was pretty obvious after sitting and looking at the screen. It just seemed a little head scratching, since I wasn't exactly sure what or how the "new company name" was going to be used....

Wonder if there are any other folks holding ABT and lived thru the recent spinoff.

My current info is correct, but everything related to Cost Basis is wacked. Even my actual Schwab account is messed up between the original purchase vs the current implied cost basis post-spinoff.
