Can't print

My Quicken 2011 refused to print, this afternoon. It has worked very well with the current printer/computer setup until today. I checked some other client software on this computer and these have no problems with the printer.

I get the error message in Quicken;

Unable to verify the active printer at the system level.

I tried doing a full shut-down and re-boot but this didn't resolve the problem.

Quicken did the daily downloads with no problems and seems to be working well in all respects other than printing.

Any ideas what might be causing this problem?

Thanks, Gordon

The "Validate" feature in Q2011 has been improved to allow a few more options; one of those options can sometimes fix problems like yours.

File > File Operations > Validate and Repair

Choose "Reset all Quicken printer settings".

I believe that this will force you to redo your Quicken "Printer Setup", but if it clears the error, it should be worth that effort.

I believe having "too many" printers defined in Windows can also cause a problem like yours. If you have any printers setup that you don't need, use Control Panel to uninstall them.

John, thanks for your help. I tried your suggestions last night with no success. I tried about everything I could think of then shut down for the night. This morning the print function seems to be working well.

I had done several total shut down/re-boot processes, yesterday but the printing problem remained. Maybe it needed a longer shut-down waiting period. Who knows???

I suspect it's more likely that it took a reboot (or at least, exiting Quicken and restarting) to cause one, or both, of the changes you made last night to take effect.

When you shut down, did you should leave the power off for about 30 seconds or longer? My PC has a led on the MB and I've noticed it takes about 30 seconds for the led to go out. I suspect it takes that long to completely clear all the RAM.

This may have been the error I made. I just did a quick shut-down and re-boot without waiting more than about 10 seconds.

Anyway, the overnight shut-down seems to have corrected the problem. Quicken is still printing as it should and has not reverted to the problem state....YET!

The printer problem seems to have gone away, or maybe it is just hiding. I still can't figure out why all my other client software could use the printer but Quicken could not, until I shut the computer down overnight. Why was Quicken so picky and fussy? Gordon
