This discussion is an excellent example of a "failure to communicate". [See: Strother Martin's comment to Paul Newman in the movie "Cool Hand Luke".]

The original poster can not be bothered to make it clear that he is referring to "check numbers"; instead insisting on calling them "transaction numbers".

The Quicken SuperUser trying to help the op apparently does not realize that the original poster is referring to "check numbers": he repeatedly assumes the op is referring to "Transaction ID's" (which can NEVER be created by Quicken or a Quicken user).

The simple insight to this issue is this:

When a BofA account used Direct Connect and was Activated for Online Billpay (now called Bank Billpay), any BofA billpay transaction scheduled in QUICKEN (where the Quicken Check# field read "Send") would be assigned a "check number" (intended NOT to conflict with the user's manual check numbers).

That check number was not used by BofA for anything. Some bank billpay transactions are paid via Electronic Funds transfers, which have no check number. Those billpay transactions that are paid by check are given a BofA check number, which bears no relation to the check number assigned in Quicken to BofA billpay instructions.

The only place that billpay check number appeared was on a printed BofA statement; and then, only when the bill was scheduled in Quicken, and paid by an actual check. [Regardless of whether the actual payment was made by check or EFT, the billpay transaction created in Quicken was assigned a "check number".]

So the op is complaining about not getting a meaningless/misleading check number that can not be created because his BofA account can no longer use Direct Connect, therefore can not use Bank Billpay.

In twenty-one+ years of using Quicken and bank billpay with BofA, I have never once used the online billpay check number for reconciling, or anything else.
