Convert MS Money 05 to Quicken 05 Problem <TJS Oviedo>

Jul 17, 2005 15 Replies

I converted my data per instructions and tool, (twice), no hitches. I go to Quicken's category list and it's a jumbled mess... income and expense categories all mixed up... categories and subs all over the place. I started a brand new file and Qs preinstalled categories are arranged perfectly.

Any ideas?

Anyone think (or know...) if Quicken 06 data converter is better?

Thanks,

Tom.

You can't convert same year data between Quicken and MSMoney. You will be able to convert Money '05 data when Quicken '06 comes out.

The instructions with the Q conversion tool say you can. What gives, then?

Any hope of 06 being able to do a better job?

I ran into this problem with the 2004 versions. The conversion tool says that it works but all I got was a mess. I called Quicken and they had me export the data to a qif file to be imported into Q04. Since that is not an option with 05 then you might call them and see what their solution is.

I may be incorrect that using the qif file is not an option for 2005 so this method may be a solution for you.

You can't convert between Quicken to / from Money in the same release (i.e. 2005). Both are being programmed at the same time and the companies do not know what the other company is introducing into their product.

I was able to convert from MS Money 2004 to Quicken 2004. Unfortunately the Quicken conversion tool is useless and Intuit will instruct you to export the data from Money and import it into quicken using the qif format. Worked perfectly.

The KBs on conversion from Money aren't clear (to me) whether one can convert from M2005 to Q2005. There is an implication that conversion is possible, but I suspect you will have to wait three weeks for Q2006 to be released, and use that to convert your Money file.

According to KB576479, you can "call (800) 811-8766 to speak with a Quicken technical support agent. There is currently no charge for assistance with your data conversion".

I remember the thread you created about this when you were doing it. I looked at a few KBs then because I didn't believe a M to Q conversion was possible between the same years. Intuit definitely says M2004 can be converted to Q2004 (which you proved -- or I still wouldn't have believed it).

I think the reason it is possible to convert from a same year version of Money is because the conversion uses Money transaction reports to create the data for the conversion (rather than relying on knowing the internal format of Money data). If Money transaction reports are like Quicken transaction reports, they contain all the basic info necessary to create Quicken transactions, their format has changed little, if at all, over the years, and any minor change in them could be easily patched into the conversion tool at the last minute.

It worked but it didn't. That's why I ended up using the qif method per Intuit's customer service.

This is correct. Part of the conversion process exports from Money a transaction report. The conversion program is *supposed* to convert that transaction report into qif file that gets imported. For me, that process failed and Intuit had me do the steps manually.

So what happens if the target for the conversion is Quicken 2005? The Q2005 QIF import limitations would seem to remove this alternative.

Good thread...I went the other way this year - Quicken to Money (big mistake as 2005 is a disaster). I am in the process of coverting back to Quicken and am looking FORWARD to the next release which I can link my statements. I hope Quicken really delivers on this. Cheers....

Probably not ... at least not technically. Q2005 can still import "" from a QIF file (which, I assume is what one would be doing in a conversion). Based on past experience, "all accounts" is not a very satisfying approach to populating a new Quicken file, but, I think it can be done.
