moving to Q 11

My Q Deluxe 2008 is putting up warnings that it will n9o longer download transactions from my FIs after April. So I will need to move up to Q deluxe 2011.

Any advice on the best way to upgrade smoothly without losing data?

Back up your data. Make sure your reports are the way you want them. Install Q11 in a different directory from 08. I believe it might stay there and you can test them against each other.

Q11 (and Q10) makes 1 big qdf file with all data in it, rather than the 4 or so files earlier versions did.

Just a couple of days ago, I had a OSU that took forever, and afterwards balances were off. I had to go to a backup and restore it, because I couldn't figue out where the error was. I have no idea what caused the corruption, but I was glad I had the backup ...

Assuming you haven't been having problems it's not that likely to happen, just take reasonable precautions. Backup your 2009 data files, run a file validate and install 2011. Don't get spooked when you run 2011. It uses a single container file instead of all the separate files that used to show up.

I just did this last week. Used my standard upgrade method.

  1. Backup current file in Q08
  2. Run validate on file in Q08
  3. Run super-validate on file in Q08
  4. Do a file copy to a new file in Q08 and open in Q08
  5. Install Q11 (forces removal of Q08)
  6. Open new file in Q11 (Q11 converts into single file).

Can't see any difference between Q11 and Q08, at least for what I've done so far.

Rand validate. If it just finishes with no messages does that mean all is OK?

Remind me how to do "super-validate". Is it Ctrl-validate?

Thanks again.

I just ran the Q11 install program and everything worked.

I also run backups every night, so I wasn't too afraid of losing anything.

I upgraded to 2011 last month. I made a backup copy + a validated copy. Did not need either one. I did an upgrade so 2008 is gone from my machine.

I had a problem with the OSU not finishing its processes but that seems to have resolve itself.

The one issue I had was that somehow the opening balance of one of my accounts got changed. If you see an account with a mismatch between the online balance and quicken, with an offer to create a placeholder entry, go the the very beginning of the register and make sure the opening balance entry makes sense. Fix it if necessary.

I'm rookie in this group and don't understand two things.

What does OSU mean? My guess is it is an acronym for a program update.

What is a super-validate and how do you perform it? I notice answers that suggest a backup copy, a validated copy and a super validated copy.

OSU - One Step Update, updates by using passwords stored in the password vault of all accounts so authorized by you, as well as downloads stock prices etc (if checked to do so in the OSU screen).

Backups are your friends .

Validate and supervalidate check your file(s) for internal consistency. Used to be necessary every once in a while to prevent data corruption. Supervalidate was sometimes used if validate couldn't resolve problems, but should only be used then, since at times it could lead to corruption rather than cure it. Therefore all these operations should be done on copies of the files, AND there should be good backup copies around too. I would be rather hesitant to use supervalidate unless reall, REALLY necessary.

Your Quicken file is a database with many, many records, and each record has fields (sort of like a spreadsheet with rows and columns). Databases usually edit a record by making a copy with the new information, then marking the old record as "not used anymore". That increases disk space requirements and complexity. I'm not sure whether validate removes the not current and unused records. In the past, I have made a new copy of my database at quarterly or more often intervals, using the Quicken File|File Operations|copy command. That "compacts" the data file and makes it more efficient.

HTH. YMMV. acronymfinder.com

In Jan Costco had two coupon discounts: $20 off Quicken Deluxe (from $40) and $10 off TTax Deluxe+state (from $50). Don't know what's out there now unfortunately.

One Step Update. It's a scheduled or manually initiated transaction download process that also checks for program updates. The alternative is to download transaction files from your financial institution's web page and import them into Quicken. Some banks prefer this as the fees Quicken charges for this multistep process are less than the OSU fees.

You really shouldn't be running a supervalidate unless you are trying to repair an already corrupted file as it can damage the file. That's why it's hidden. Some people think if validate is good, super validate must be better. It's not.

I have always heard this too, but never had a problem with super validate (super validate never found or fixed a problem either so not sure what that means). I do always do a backup first so if comething gets screwed up I can go back to the backup and try to fix things. I did have a database problem once, I think it was in Q03. Never could find it, but after upgraded and converting my file to Q05, in Q05 a couple transactions were flagged as "bad" and once I knew what the bad transactions were, I could delete them and re-enter them which finally fixed the problem.

Amazon electronic downloads are reasonably priced if you aren't looking for anything else.

Just curious. Has Q11 fixed the problem with HP lasers (and Brother) that's plagued both Q05 and Q08? Intuit admitted the problem on a forum and never seemed to produce a fix.
