OSU for UMB Bank

I have a new Visa credit card that I recently got from UMB Bank. Whenever I do a one-step update, UMB asks me to get a secure access code from them. Is there some way I can turn that off?

I don't have any accounts with UMB and I don't find any discussions involving UMB in the Quicken Community. So anything I offer is just a guess.

My guess is that the answer to your question is, No.

I'm assuming you're using the Express Web Connect connection method. SO unless you're able to use Direct Connect with UMG, or you're able and willing to use Web Connect with UMB, I'd say you're stuck.

I think (at least some) financial institutions are getting concerned about security with Express Web Connect downloads and are adding the "confirm access code" approach as a cover their ass approach to prevent any possible security breach being thought of as their fault.

You can always ask the financial institution, they may offer an option to turn that security measure off. But don't assume that if you find such an option that it will be applied to Quicken EWC downloads: BofA has that option but it only applies to logons to their web site - EWC downloads from BofA are required to supply the texted security code, regardless of the setting at their web site.

Yes.

Thanks. I'll try calling them when I get a chance.

Two more points/questions before I call:

  1. You say "able and willing to use Web Connect with UMB." Why might I not be willing to do that?
  2. When I go to the Account List, under "Transaction Download, it says Yes (Improve connection). When I click on"Improve connection" it takes me to a screen that says

You need a Direct Connect login to use this service

. May be different from the user name and password you use for your online banking

. You may need to activate this service with your bank before connecting. Fees may apply.

I click next and it asks me for the User ID and Password "for your online USB Bank account." I enter them and press connect.

I then get the message

"Sorry. We encountered an error. (It's not your fault.)

Quicken is having trouble connecting to USB Bank.

I've tried this several times over the past few days, and the same thing always happens.Any suggestions, other than calling them.

I've called UMB a few times in the past few weeks and I've always been very disappointed in the knowledge and helpfulness of the person I spoke with.

"Able": does UMB offer Web Connect downloads? I was too lazy to check - but I have now, and UMB does offer Web Connect downloads. "Willing: are you willing to manually logon to the financial institution web site each time you want to download (and initiate a separate download for each account held there)?

Not nearly as convenient as Direct Connect (or usually even Express Web Connect)

Just guessing (and assuming you got no error number):

Some financial institutions require Quicken users to specifically authorize Quicken access, perhaps UMB requires that only for Direct Connect (as in: "You may need to activate this service with your bank before connecting"). In my experience, there is usually someplace at the fi's web site where the user can provide the "authorization": otherwise, you'd need to talk to the financial institution.

And/or your financial institution may require different logon credentials for Direct Connect (as in: "You need a Direct Connect login to use this service. May be different from the user name and password you use for your online banking"). If there is no info supplied when you try to setup the account for Direct Connect in Quicken, my guess is you need to ask the financial institution.

You can ask to speak with UMB's Quicken liaison person: I believe every fi that offers Quicken downloads has such a person.

[I just took a look in the Quicken Community and found the following discussion (the problem there does seem to include an error number - namely CC-501):

Unfortunately the discussion is old, and it's closed. But you could start your own discussion in the Community and include the same link I supplied, with comments indicating you have the same problem.]

OK, thanks for the clarification.

Right. No error number.

I looked all over the site, and couldn't find any such place. But in my opinion the site is terrible and it's hard to find almost anything. So maybe I missed it.

I didn't know that any FI had them. Yes, I'll do that. Thanks again.

You're welcome.

Would you consider letting others know what the problem was and how you solved it?

It was one of the choices on the UMB web site that was unclear. I can't remember exactly what it was but it was something like "Add the account that had to be changed to "Modify the account."

Sorry, I wish I could be more specific, but I can't. It probably doesn't matter though; I don't think anyone here has an account with UMB, since nobody but you replied to my message.

Their web site is terrible, in my opinion. It's very difficult to navigate the choices and find what you're looking for. I think I shouldn't have to go back there again; at least I hope I don't.

Thanks.

Just to confirm: did you end up being able to download using Direct Connect?

Yes, and I no longer have to have UMB send me a code to enter before I do. All is well now.
