Q Premier 06 -- Change AccountType

I purchased Q Prem 06 this morning to upgrade Q Deluxe 05. Installed and all went well. In exploring the investment management tools, I discovered that my 3 IRA accounts were located within Retirement Accounts but that two of them characterized as Account Type: Invest and one of them was characterized as Account Type: IRA. If I go to Account List --->Edit, there is no way to change the Account Type. All three accounts involve equities.

This causes a minor inconvenience when reviewing Performance and Anaylsis. Is there a way to change the Account Type short of creating a new account of the proper type, transferring the transactions and deleting the old account?

I think so, but can't be sure (I was able to do it with a couple of test accounts, but not sure my test duplicates your situation. I think you can create your case by telling Quicken to make a non-retirement account "tax deferred").

On the Summary tab for the account, in the Account Attributes pane, the Account Type is shown. If you see a blue link below that asking if you want to convert to 401k or IRA, and you click that link, you should get a dialog box with a choice of 401k or IRA.

What is the minor inconvenience you referred to?

I meant to say, I think you can create your case by telling Quicken to make a Single Mutual Fund account, "tax deferred".

I don't know if it makes a difference in his situation but while a Regular IRA is "tax deferred", a Roth IRA is "tax exempt". IIRC, this only makes a difference when the Quicken (2005) Retirement Planner is used and withdrawal of funds from an IRA is part of the Retirement plan.

With a regular IRA, Retirement Planner should reduce the withdrawal amount by the marginal tax rate. With a Roth IRA, the withdrawal amount should not be reduced because there is no tax on a withdrawal from a Roth IRA held for more then 5 years over the age of 59 1/2.

I have never verified this to see if it works properly in Q2005 because I still use Quicken Financial Planner (QFP) of 1999. QFP does understand the difference between a regular IRA and a Roth IRA and handles the tax associated with withdrawals correctly.

I manage my tax-deferred, retirement accounts with a different strategy than my investment accounts. Therefore, if I compare the Performance of my retirement accounts with my investment accounts, I can determine the comparative performance of each strategy. Within Performance, if I click the Investment Button, I get all of the accounts that have Account Type: Invest, even though two of those accounts are Located in the Retirement group. I can overcome this by clicking on the Multiple Accounts button and then selecting the appropriate accounts. This takes an extra 27 seconds and thus is a very minor inconvenience. By the way, when I do this, the account whose attribute is Acount Type: IRA is listed as an Investment account.

I have been using Quicken since the DOS days and have upgraded every year. My guess is that I set up the two retirement accounts causing the problem incorretly several years ago. It was not a problem, until I began exploring Performance in Q 06. Therefore, the problem may be the status of my data and not Q 06.

This is my first attempt at using NewsGroups. I did't mean to take up everybody's time by presenting an issue that my be only related to me.

Don't ever worry about that; those that aren't interested can simply ignore the thread after reading either a few of the posts or some of the entires. Anyone else who 'complains'? It's their problem for not managing their viewing habits correctly (for them), not your problem. So ask away!

Thanks for enlightening me on your problem.

I'm not sure why you said this; it certainly was not my intention to cast any aspersions on your interest. I never had any question other than exactly what I asked ... nothing to read between the lines.

John,

The problem has been solved. I finally found the Account Attributes pane and converted two of the accounts to IRA's just as you suggested.

Please understand that my comment regarding my original post had absolutly nothing to do with your response. I appreciate your input very much..

Regards,

Chuck
