Quotes, Asset classes, headlines and alerts

In Quicken desktop 2008 Deluxe, when I do a one step update one of the options is to download "Quotes, Asset classes, headlines and alerts". I have usually selected this for some time but am not sure that is wise.

  1. If I elect to *not* select this option won't I still have a decent price history from my broker's downloads?
  2. Since I think this is really swelling my file sizes, is there a way to get rid of what it has downloaded previously?

Even if you do get prices this way, you won't get the other characteristics, like asset classes, headlines, etc. It would be fairly simple to satisfy yourself about this: just leave the "Quotes ... " download unchecked for a week or two and see what you get for prices. You can always have Quicken fill in the blanks with an Historical Price download, if necessary.

I'm not sure you'll save much by not downloading "Quotes ... "; prices take up the same amount of room whether they come from Comstock/Iverson or from your financial institution.

But you can certainly cull your Quicken price history file (and I think that is the only file whose data comes from Quote downloads, whose size you can affect).

Security Detail View > (select a security) > Update > Edit price history.

You can select any prices you like, using the same selection methods you would use to select files in Windows Explorer, then click Delete to delete them.

Thanks John.

I did not really know how much additional file size these added. If it is not a large amount, it does not matter and I will continue downloading them.

Thanks,

Jeff
