Specify Lots button grayed out

Q 2008 D R8

While trying to specify lots in a Remove Shares transaction for a

401(k) account, the Specify Lots button was grayed out. This isn't an issue where I don't have enough shares to cover a sale, the button is completely Inactive.

For the transaction, I had entered a date, a security, & a share amount.

My data file is >35 meg. & I'm in the process of cutting over to a new file that will be much smaller. Have I enountered a size limit? In my new data file, after picking the security & the # of shares, I can still Specify Lots.

Is there a setting in my data file that I've inadvertently flagged?

Perhaps, in a manner of speaking.

Check to see that the security is not designated to "Use Average Cost"; the default for mutual funds. [Edit the security in the Security List.]

Badda bing, badda bang, badda fixed.

Thanks.

Now here's another question. I've specified lots before, but I never put a check in that box in Security List. Is that something that was done automatically w/ R8? That's probably the most recent significant change I can remember.

Why would you even want to specify lots in a 401(k) account?

In an ordinary investment account, you pay tax on Capital Gain only, at the Capital Gains Tax Rate, and you may want to specify lots to minimize Capital Gain Tax for a particular withdrawal.

In a 401(k) account, the original investments were "tax deferred", and you pay tax on any withdrawal as "ordinary income", and you pay tax on the full amount withdrawn. There is no advantage to specifying lots.

Figuring the tax gets much more complicated if you have mixed deferred and non-deferred funds in a 410(k).

I don't think there has been any change. Ever since I can remember, "mutual fund" securities created in Quicken have defaulted to using "average cost".

Other security types may not default to "use average cost"; but no one knows how you setup the securities in Quicken. Even you may have forgotten whether you ever changed the security type or the "average cost" attribute for a security.

You didn't provide any details about how you handled your "old" Quicken "file"; nor any details about how you created your "new" Quicken file. I suspect that somewhere in the process, the problem occurred.
