Wells Fargo WARNING??? April Fool SCAM??

Hi, all.

These two posts by "Mark Berger" and "Lance Courtland" look to me like an attempt to flood Wells Fargo with demands for $50 each for "customer satisfaction credit". :>(

You probably noticed that all 3 posts had identical texts, and all came from the same address. I've been a Wells Fargo customer (and stockholder) for years, and I've received no such letter. Have you?

I've forwarded one of the posts to snipped-for-privacy@wellsfargo.com and we'll see what the bank has to say about it. Sadly, I'll probably just get a form letter saying "Thank you"...and never learn anything more about the results.

If I'm wrong, then I'll apologize to "Mark" and "Lance" - and to all of you for the false alarm.

I received a letter yesterday about changes to Wells Fargo for Quicken.

I got the letter yesterday. It didn't mention that you needed to do this April 1 or later. However, the link they sent in the letter

*did* mention not to do it before April 1.

Also, per the web site:

If you pay your bills through Quicken, you will need to cancel all pending payments before moving to the new system, and then re-create them after the move. You do not need to change your payees.

I received the letter, and made the changes a few days ago. It took about 10 minutes total for my accounts. I had 3 duplicate transactions in each of two accounts. It took another 2-3 minutes total to delete the duplicates.

They did advise you to complete an online update, and create a a backup before making the changes. That just seems like common sense in any case. After that, it is just the process to disable online access on each WF account, then change the FI to "Wells Fargo Bank", and re-enable online updates. Quicken 2011 automatically matched all of the accounts with my Quicken accounts, so, I only had to enable one, and they were all picked up. It went like clockwork.

Since I update regularly, and backup every day, I skipped the extra backup. doing those things regularly also seem like common sense.

One nice change is that I now have direct connect updates for my 25 month CD. That didn't work before.

It is interesting that Mark and Lance both use such similar phrasing, and posted only two minutes apart. Seems more than a bit phishy to me.

It's not "phishy" or a scam. The reason I recalled and changed the post was because of spelling and grammatical errors, and because I had sent the original post from the wrong account.

I was just trying to warn people of the mistake by WF, and help them avoid the problems I had. Everything in the posts is true. I think banks should be held accountable for their errors, just as we are.

Thanks for clearing that up, Lance. My apology for questioning your motives.

Hi, Lance.

Sorry if I panicked. As I said I would if I'm wrong; I apologize to you and to Mark - and to anyone else who might have been unduly worried by my "warning".

Some other Wells Fargo customers got the letter from the bank. I still haven't. Maybe it depends on our individual WF history.

As I said, I've been a WF depositor for many years (about 20), and I've been downloading transactions from WF into Quicken for about half of that time. But I sign on to wellsfargo.com and use their Bill Pay, rather than Quicken's. That might make a difference in whether we need to change things at this time. I was never a Wachovia customer. My only Wells Fargo merger was from Norwest Bank, a decade or so ago.

This should all be clarified in a few days - I hope.

Same here, except that I did receive the letter and have been using Direct Connect and paying $3 a month. I followed the procedures and they worked OK. When I decided to use web connect instead to avoid the $3 monthly fee, I called WF, and the helpful agent said she'd be happy to waive all online fees - for Direct Connect and for Quicken Bill Pay (which I have not used - like you I use WF online bill pay). Although I have been with this FI since

1992 (United/Norwest/Wells Fargo) and have substantial balances and grandfathered accounts, in the past they wouldn't waive Quicken fees because they were charged them by Intuit. Maybe the Wachovia merger and other events led them to change. BTW, Norwest acquired Wells Fargo and decided to use the WF name; the HQ still is in Minneapolis, not San Francisco.
