bank account for unemployed

Hello, I would appreciate some advice on opening a bank account.

A friend of mine is unemployed (looks after her kids) and she is unable to open a Bank Account.

Are there any banks that offer accounts to unemployed people ojn benefits? I remember Halifax used to have a basic account a few years ago. She basically just needs an account so she can set up direct debits.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Basic bank accounts are unlikely to offer DD's. Banks don't like giving transmission accounts to people who they are unlikely to make any money out of and who in fact will cost them money, by for instance using it only for a few DD'S.

The pdf I mentioned has a table which shows all the banks/building societies listed as offering a direct debit facility on their "Basic Bank" accounts.

The one exception being the Post Office Card Account
