I'm concerned that 02/genie may try and trace me (location). Are there any phones that allow you to stay private

I watch The Bill. It seems the police can use location information to find out where you are (rightly so)

But also, in a recent change to the 02 terms & conditions, they are allowed to pass on my information (regarding where I am in the UK) to debt collection agencies etc.

I owe HSBC about 700 UKPounds.

I have a bad credit score but I don't care as I now spend 70% of my time overseas

However, I'm on a cracking deal. I get 50mins off peak everyday and

*literally* unlimited SMS text messages

I text alot (so it's a superb deal)

I realise I can just take the battery out of the phone (to prevent being traced) but what if I want to text people?

Suppose I use a really old handset. Will this make a difference? Or can they still trace me from my signal.

PS - this is not my IP address. I am using a guest internet connection in a public building.

If you are still calling them genie mate, you obv don't have the intelligence to avoid getting caught!

Hope they catch you and throw away the key

If your phone is turned on and connected to the service, they *know* more or less where you are 'cos they know which masts are picking up your signal. Using an old handset would make no difference.

Why not just pay HSBC their 700 quid - then you won't have to worry?! I doubt whether anybody here will encourage you to be dishonest.

Make sure you dont text unless you're wearing your tinfoil hat and you'll be fine. You *are* wearing a tinfoil hat, aren't you?

Surely one way around it would be to purchase a new PAYG phone with cash

- they'll be able to trace the phone, but they won't know who it belongs to.

HSBC are the GREEDY MULTINATIONALS who PROFIT from DECENT HARD WORKING people such as myself.

Are you serious? Who's side are you on here?

They have made a mint from me in UNLAWFUL bank charges. I took a loan to cover these bank charges. The interest is crippling me. My life is ruined.

Get off your high horse or shut up if you have no useful advice.

That's pennies, my dear.

Bad debter...

Text with the phone turned off.

I don't think anyone cares where you are, tbh. Your phone needs to speak to a base station/mast to send a message, get coverage, etc. They know the phone is connected to certain base stations otherwise nothing would work.

Thank goodness for that.

Then pay the money that you've stolen back, or argue it in court. If you're truly right, then you've got nothing to fear.

To be honest, o2 wont be allowed to pass on your geographical location or any of your details to hsbc or any other organisation. We have a law called the Data Protection Act. Im not quite sure if this covers geographical locations - then again im not studying for a law degree!

If your so paranoid about be traced by the bank, then pay them back! If you have speant thier money, they are entitled to get the amount

+interest!

Tip if you really want to be safe and never found here are some tips:

1) use a phone box 2) always pay in cash, never any electronic form 3) live in the scottish highlands away from civilisation 4) dont use the internet

hang on, aren`t you trying to steal from HSBC by avoiding paying them the money that you owe them? Hardly the actions of decent hardworking people surely?

If they are unlawful then challenge them. Then learn how to manage your money - how can anyone be stupid enough to run up this level of debt from charges? Why didn`t you get an overdraft authorised, to give you a bit of leeway incase you get your sums wrong? That`s why I`ve got a 5k overdraft limit, to make sure that if a bill comes out early I won`t go over any limit that will cost me money - I notice and transfer the cash into my current account the same day.

Perhaps if you wheren`t trying to steal then people might want to help you.

So you can pay back £120 a year by getting rid of the phone - and perhaps if you find an alternative cheaper way to travel abroad, you can pay back more of what you owe.

If the charges were "illegal" - for which the financial services authority (?) have now set a limit of a £12 charge - you can claim back all the excess charges.

You have nothing to lose as you're abroad 70% of the time, so it won't be an issue if they close your account (which they have been known to do, much to the chagrin of the FSA etc.)

They are a bank. People ruin their own lives, they don't need any help from HSBC. You are responsible for your own situation. Charges are placed on your account because YOU spent more than YOU had. Am I right?

Not yours, thats for sure.

In that case challenge them in court - or complain to the banking Ombudsman. That's better than trying to hide from them.
