Has upgraded to newest version. 1.20 ver. of Microsoft Retail Management System. needs to know if this version is able to use debit cards. I am using PC Charge for the credit authorization. I believe that RMS is able to use debit cards. but I guess so that debit card works only with the city bank. Is there any way can use debit card with pccharge or icverify. Or do you guys have any other version or other third party software for that debit card?
RMS 1.2 Service pack 2 now supports multiple acquiring banks for debit and credit card processing. The banks include Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, and Payment Tech.
let me re-phrase it. Global is Global Payments. I want to work with the native MS RMS EDC functionality. Since native functionality is restricted to Vital, does vital allow for debit card processing (when using a preffered bank)?
Yes, Vital allows for Debit card processing, at least with "Prefered Providers". Global may not support debit cards through the Vital Interface however...
thanks to all. FUI at this point it is my understanding that using vital and native RMS functionality you CAN accept debit cards, just not PIN based transactions. (the debit card needs to have a Visa/MC logo)
There is a lot of unnecessary mystery about debit on RMS. The built in support for EDC is based on the Vital platform. But the credit and debit use different Vital posting methods. Credit uses an https: based protocol whiledebit uses a different SSL based protocol. This is evident in the RMS EDCsetup screens that have URL entries for credit and for debit. Vital supports both, but not every acquirer knows how to set this up or understands it. Also some acquirers may not actually be using Vital but may instead be using their own front ends that emulate Vital's messages, but may not support the two mechanisms for credit and debit. Another thing to understand is that many acquirers would prefer to use their own front ends instead of Vital due to cost issues, but most can use Vital if they have to. Of course, it may not be a great idea to force an acquirer to set up on a front end they are not enthused or knowledgable about.
Another way to get support for debit is with a "plug-in" that uses the events in RMS to redirect payments. This method bypasses the built-in support found in RMS.
I am a principal with Mercury Payment Systems. We have a lot of experience setting up customers for credit, debit and gift card through RMS using both built-in Vital support and plug-in software.

Yes, in most cases, you can use a debit card for a credit card transaction, you just will not get the same low rates. A pin-based debit is charged to you at ~$.25 -$.99 for each sale. If a debit card being used as a credit card, you are charged a percentage for each sale, known as your discount rate, anywhere from ~1.25% - 3.35%
Assume your debit rate is a quarter and your credit card discount rate is
1.75%.
A $100.00 sale will cost you $0.25 for a pin-based debit card or $1.75 for a credit card sale.
