How do gift cards work?

Oct 23, 2007 6 Replies

I'm new to MS POS 2.0, so please forgive me if this is off base... I want to be able to sell and accept gift cards in my store. I do not want to use pre-loaded Visa cards, but rather just a custom card that I will have someone build for me. What is the right way to go about this? I'm thinking that I need to get cards with a unique code on their mag-stripe which I can register in MS POS 2.0 with an associated $ amount. Is this correct?

MS POS doesn't support Gift Cards, only RMS. Craig

Randy,

I have be using Givex Gift Cards with our RMS v1.20187 for about two year without much issue other than the cashier doing wrong for lack of training by their store manager.

I have set the Givex Gift Card up as our way of doing refunds for my company.

Ed, I may be wrong but I think he was referring to a built-in solution for MS POS not RMS. If not then there are several options for gift cards outside of MS POS. Besides Givex I think Mercury has this also, and there's probably more. Craig

Randy, The above poster is incorrect in saying MS POS 2.0 does not support gift cards. I have been processing them for several months now.

Speak with your merchant service to see if they have a Gift Card program.

MS POS 2.0 needs a specific First Data Gift Card platform setup to work. The platform(s) needed is "North" front-end and "Buypass" backend.

You can call Concorde EFSnet help desk at 1-877-399-4545 ask for Kristy. She is very knowledgeable on MS POS 2.0 gift card setup and can point you in the right direction.

It took me 2 months of calling and researching to get this solution. I am using Sun Trust. The cards are custom cards we designed, they are reloadable.

Good Luck!

I was referring to a built in voucher system for gift cards. RMS has it, MSPOS doesn't. I did mention that there are gift card services that can be used with POS it just isn't built in like it is with RMS. Craig

Don,

Sorry for the long delay with this, it's been so much work getting our store up and running that I just haven't gotten back to it.

Thanks for your response on gift cards. I wound up setting up merchant services and a gift card program with First Data and have recently received my first shipment of gift cards. Yesterday was the first attempt at selling one, which sadly, failed.

I was able to do the "Issue Gift Card" process which read the card and put it into the transaction. However, when I went to accept payment through the normal tender process, I got a First Data error dialog that said the Gift Card is invalid. I tried it with multiple cards, which made no difference. I called First Data for help, but the customer timed out and left. That hurt.
