Making life easier ?? FI to FI moves

[Qkn Dlx 2015 on 32-bit Vista Ultimate SP2]

We have moved our investments - regular brokerage & IRA accounts - from one FI to another. We don't want to lose continuity/history on costs, gains/losses, etc.

Presently, downloads from each FI show, respectively, REMOVED and ADDED actions.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Can I edit these to action SHARES TRANSFERRED BETWEEN ACCOUNTS to serve our goal?
  2. Good idea? Bad idea? Doesn't matter?

Thanks.

No. There is no such thing as an (actual) Quicken "Shares Transferred Between Accounts" transaction.

It is a pseudo-transaction: when you initiate a Quicken Shares Transferred Between Accounts transaction, it creates one Shares Removed transaction for each security in the FROM account and one Shares Added transaction for each lot of each security being transferred, in the TO account.

I'm not sure why there would be an need to treat the process differently.

But you probably should do the Quicken "Shares Transferred ...." transaction before you download from the financial institution so you can match their downloaded transactions to your manually generated transactions ... when applicable.

Your Quicken generated Shares Added transactions should contain the correct cost basis for the transferred shares ... your downloaded financial institution Shares Added transaction(s) will likely not have the correct cost basis. And you will probably have only one downloaded Shares Added transaction in the TO account for each security transferred ... in which case, you should just delete those downloaded Shares Added transactions.

Thank you very much, John, for the thoughtful - as always - reply. I will take one of two paths...

  1. Delete Added in TO, chge Removed in From to Shares Transferred & see effect on securities costs
  2. Delete both Removed and Added from FROM & TO, then start from scratch.

What seems to be working, thank the Lord:

  1. Deleted Added in TO accounts
  2. Deleted Removed in FROM accounts
  3. Initiated Shares Transferred in FROM accounts and instead of fighting each security, used the All Securities radio button.
  4. Qkn chugged along not only transferring each security, but each LOT of each security with associated cost and date of purchase. Hallelujah!!!

It's Mother's Day, so I'm sure she's watching from above.
