Q2006 pin vault weirdness

Dec 26, 2007 9 Replies

Windows XP Pro & Quicken 2006 Premier Home & Business.

I have several accounts that are all activated for online use, with account numbers. But I noticed one was missing from the pin vault account list so went to add it, a Chase credit card account. Even though I can login manually on the Chase web site, when I enter the same login name and password to Quicken, and it tries, it's rejected by Chase as invalid user ID or password.

Anybody else notice this or have a solution? Google turned up a possible problem in Q2007 for Chase accounts, something about passwords over 10 characters, so I shortened mine to 10 chars but the problem continues.

Bob:

I have multiple Chase personal and business credit cards. They all download without problems, BUT, I noticed that ALL of my passwords are 8 or 9 characters. Maybe you can try shortening to 8 or 9, and see if that works.

As a separate issue, someday I'm going to be motivated to change all my passwords to the same one. Chase forces me to change passwords after a certain number of months. And I have to use 5 different passwords before I can re-use the original one. I've found that I just have to make 5 more changes on the web site in quick succession to get back to the one I was forced to change ;-)

Bob P.S. Security hawks are probably aghast.

If I understand you correctly, this should never happen. Any account that is activated for downloading should appear in the Pin Vault; it's activating an account that puts its name in the Pin Vault (and deactivating should remove its name from the Pin Vault).

I assume you are referring to entering the user-id and password in the activate dialog.

There are no requirements that the Quicken user-id or password be the user-id/password that you use to logon to your financial institution web site; though I did think that you would use the web site logon info for the Quicken account setup logon.

I'd double check with the fi.

You could try deActivating the account for downloading, then reActivating it.

If you really had a Quicken account that was Activated for downloading and the account name did not appear in the Pin Vault, perhaps you have a corrupted Pin Vault. The solution for that is to delete the Pin Vault and re-create it. Unless you are certain you have memorized every password in the vault, before deleting the Pin Vault, Print it; that will also print the passwords.

I doubt this is the same problem you're having. There are a few users who have been experiencing problems with wanting to enter a password in the Pin Vault that is truncated while being entered in the Pin Vault at a length less than their actual password. But I think that problem has to do with Quicken not having the most current info for editing that particular fi's passwords.

The dialog for activating an account will accept something like

31 characters for the password.

FWIW, and in addition to what Bob Wang and John Pollard said, Chase is being a PITA (vernacular used freely). I suggest calling Chase web support and complaining. 1 set of username and password could/should be sufficient to access all your accounts from Quicken, and I believe it can be the same aas the web login. I had accumulated a whole bunch of ID/PWD combos, and got them all but one killed by finally speaking to websupport.

I did try that, and no-go.

So I took the advice of another poster and called their service center. After getting passed around a bit--not too bad--I talked to a Brian who said that initiating the download from a web browser is free, but from Quicken they charge $9.95/month. I think this is probably true, I have only a single credit card with them, and I read Quicken charges FIs quite a bit to download directly. My own bank (Wells Fargo) wants to charge me for a direct download and I have a lot of accounts with them! On the other hand, I have a Citibank CC and do get direct downloads. Go figger.

I recommend either PassPack

anonline password generator/storage, or KeePass

local password generator/storage free program. The latter can alsofit on a USB flash drive,e.g.

I started using both a few months ago (PassPack as main/central storage, periodically updating to local KeePass) because I couldn't keep the passwords straight and didn't like having Firefox store them on my work computer. Plus with the browser storing them I couldn't access them when traveling. Yeah, I ended up using just a handful of the same passwords which is bad. I really like both programs and now all my passwords, even for forums, are auto-generated and all different.

JP> I'd double check with the fi.

Did that, see other reply.

Tried that. Also tried deleting the PV and creating anew. Anyway the problem was Chase charges $9.95/mo for direct Q downloads.

Only on certain accounts. I believe they waive the fee if you have a certain level of business and I know they don't charge it on legacy accounts they took over from other institutions.

I have a single Chase credit card, and I am not charged for direct downloads. I have had it for several years, so that may make a difference.

I have one Chase card also. I got it a few months ago when they offered it with a good rebate package, and $50.00 when I used it. I download directly into Quicken, and I don't pay anything for that privilege. I seem to remember that I had to log on to their web page with my browser, and follow a link to enable Quicken download.

I just went back to look, and from the account page after logging on, there is a link to "Customer Center". From that page, there is a link to enable Quicken and Money downloads.

Hope this helps.

Sure did! I had not studied that page in detail...when I clicked on the Enable link, it said everything was ready. Then I had to deactivate online access in Quicken and reactivate, and now it works. Huh, imagine Chase trying to knick me for a monthly charge...

Now to try to get Wells Fargo to direct download for free too.
