Is there a way to get a report of holdings by security type? E.g., bonds, mutual funds, CDs. The Report from "Security List" gives transactions for the highlighted security. The Security List itself is fine, except that there's no way to sort by SecurityType.

As far as I remember, this is something I've tried to do (it was some time ago), but couldn't. Unless Intuit has changed things in recent versions, you're out of luck.
When you don't provide your Quicken version(year), there is no way for anyone to give you a devinitive answer. Q2005 and Q2006 (deluxe, US), definitively offer subtotals by security type. But I do not think you should be looking to create your report from the Security List? Try an Investment report ... say Portfolio Value.
