Stupid Q problem, opening file

I recently upgraded to Q H&B 2006 and whenever I start Q I need to tell it which file to open. I have only one. It use to be under Tools

-> Preferences -> Quicken Program but I'm unable to find it anymore. Am I missing something.

The file name is Qdatacpycpy.QDF if that makes any difference.

Right click the Icon that starts Q and select Properties. At the end of the line add a space and then Qdatacpycpy.QDF. Click OK.

2 possibilities. 1) use the fully qualified file name "c:\yadda\yada\qdatacpycpy.qdf" (or whatever) and surround it in double-quotes.

2) rename your file to something that follows the old 8.3 file naming rules.

1 or both of these should do the trick.

Dan

p.s. may I ask WHY your filename has the cpycpy part of the name?

Your last question first. I've had the pleasure LOL of calling Quicken support at least 2 times for problems and one of the first things that had me do was make copies of the qdata file. After entering data to verify their fix I didn't want to reenter the info back into the original data file.

I ended up having to change the files to qdata.* and added the FQN name to the properties page. I think it would have been easier if they left the function to name the start up file in preferences the first place. I was using the qdatacpycpy.* files in last years version without any problems.

Thanks

What is this please?

The default "start up file" was never in user "preferences"; it was, and still is, in a ".ini" file along with, up to, 3 other recently opened files. The most recently opened is the default "start up file". You should see the same list in your Quicken "File" menu, near the bottom.

There are a couple of things that have changed, though they have not created a problem for me, perhaps they are involved in your problem.

1.) The .ini file location is different 2.) The .ini file name is different

The recent files list used to be stored in \WINDOWS\QUICKEN.INI; it's now in

\Documents and Settings\YOUR_WINDOWS_USER_NAME\Application Data\Intuit\Quicken\Config\QUSER.INI

I still have no problem opening a specific data file by appending its name to the "Target" Quicken program name in the desktop icon properties (and I made several changes to this during the time I have been testing Q2006, including using a myriad of folders for the data). I also have no problem opening a specific Quicken data file by creating a shortcut to it on my desktop. Both of these two approaches *should* override the default "most recently used" file.

If the file name entered in the Target properties is invalid, Quicken tries to open the default most recently opened file. I tried to test removing all of the most recently used files from the .ini file ... but somehow or another, Quicken found the last one anyway.

Finally, by actually deleting the "most recently used" file, and leaving Quicken with no valid file to open, I did get the "Select your data file" dialog box.

So, I would double and triple check the fully qualified name of the file I put in the Target properties box of the desktop icon to make sure it was correct. I suppose there could be other causes, but that is one for certain.

One of the many improvements claimed for Q2006 is a significant increase in the maximum size of file and path names; I might have understood "qdatacpycpy" having a problem in earlier Quicken versions, but not this one. What is/was your path to the file like?

Fully qualified name

If I get bored I'll install a older version and see if I can find the location. It's not a big deal anymore.

Content of the quser.ini file

[RecentFiles] 1=D:\Program Files\Quicken\Qdata 2=D:\Program Files\Quicken\QdataCpyCpy 3=D:\Program Files\Quicken\QdataCpy 4=D:\Program Files\Quicken\Test_file [Quicken] =1 BackupPath=F:\ [RecentBackupFiles] 1=F:\Qdata_20051006.QDF 2=F:\Qdata_20051003.QDF 3=F:\QdataCpyCpy_20051003.QDF 4=F:\QdataCpyCpy_20050928.QDF [ScheduleUpdate] File

All I did was an upgrade install. It is working after I changed the file from qdatacpycpy.* to qdata.*. Not sure if there was something pointing to the old location of the ini file. I'm not going to worry about it because it's working now.

Thanks again for your help.
