barcode scanning question

Is there any way to make my Symbol 2480 scanner make a different sound when the item it is scanning is not in the RMS database? We are giving away too many items as the cashiers are rushing to get customers through and not always watching the monitor (as closly as they should). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The sound that is heard when the item is not found is the 'Default Beep' within the Windows settings. There can be different sound waves associated with the Default Beep. To change the sound that is heard, follow these steps:

For Machines Running Windows XP:

  1. Go to Start | Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices.

  1. In the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window, go to the 'Sounds' tab.

  2. In the Program Events scrolling window, highlight 'Default Beep'. You will see the sound wave (.wav) assigned to the Default Beep.

  1. Click the 'browse' button to see the choices for available sound waves.

  2. Select a sound wave and click the forward arrow next to the 'browse' button to hear the selected sound wave.

  1. Choose the sound you want as the Default Beep.

  2. Apply changes and save.

For Machines Running Windows 2000:

  1. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds and Multimedia.

  1. In the Sounds and Multimedia Properties window, go to the 'Sound' tab.

  2. In the Sound Events scrolling window, highlight 'Default Beep'.

For Machines Running Windows '98:

  1. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds.

  1. In the Events scrolling window, highlight 'Default Sound'. You will see the sound wave (.wav) assigned to the Default Sound.

  2. Click the 'browse' button to see the choices for available sound waves.

  1. Select a sound wave and click the forward arrow next to the preview box to hear the selected sound wave.

  2. Choose the sound you want as the Default Sound.

  1. Apply changes and save.

Thanks Ramzey,

Just so we are on the same page. I want to keep the default scanning sound. I want to change the sound made when an item is not in my RMS DB. I'm not sure if that's what you are suggesting and I will not be able to get to my registers until Saturday. The real question is can I have two different scanning sounds. One for a valid line item entry and another for an invalid scan (not in DB but a valis sale).
