PhysicalInventory

Hello to everyone and thank you ahead of time,

I am new to RMS. I have had many complaints going back to the initaial instalation of RMS at this store. It is a mess but I believe it can be fixed.

I have three people doing physical inventory per Microsoft F1 help. They were doing it this way and always had problems. After reading various blogs. This is what I have learned (Please correct me if my thinking is wrong)

1-Doing inventory with multiple people with laptop and scanner is wrong the normal way.

2-Sometimes items before commiting shows up twice with the same quantity.

3-Sometimes the sheets dissapear when multiple people is sharing the same sheet.

4-There is a limitation of how many items can be scanned (Do anyone know the limitiations as far as how many items)?

5-I see negative items constantly after commiting.

6-When Items are scanned and there are 8 it commits half into our inventory.

Can some one define the proper procedure usinf wireless laptops and scanner to inventory with MULTIPLE people. We tried the CSV way and EXTREMELY Ineeficent!!

OR is there just a better way tried and tested for an extremely busy store.

I am grateful for any input from any RMS gurus'

Thanks, Jameer

Jameer,

There are a few ways of doing physical inventory. I dont reccemoned hauling around a laptop with each person scanning an item at a time and keeping inventory straight.

You say the CSV method is ineffecient for youo maybe its the scanner you are using or who knows. We do the CSV method all the time for parts of a store to the entire store and 45K items.

We use a scanner that will scan the barcode and ask the qty, then it automatically attaches a date time stamp, then when imports via CSV to the count sheet the program can read the date time and knows how to handle the invernotry with the date time.

Example, if you counted 15 of item 123 at 9:40AM today and at 9:50AM you sold one the system knows with the time date stamp attached that at 9:40 you had 15 counted and it would then subtract the one you sold leaving you 14.

You can use as many scanners as you want and only upload at one location. you could have 3 people scanning and one person uploading the CSV from the scanners to the program.

The other nice thing about doing this with the scanner you can upload a lookup file(in some scanners) so if you scan an item that is not in the system it will give you a warning so you can set that item aside.

Any questions let me know. We do rent scanners so you dont have to buy them so if your interested let me know.

What program do you use with your scanner to produce as CSV file. We scan into excel, add count and have to manually add time/date! very time consuming.

Dan,

We use RMS to create a CSV of the SKU's and the software that comes with the scanner to import it to the scanner. Some scanners dont have the ability to do a lookup file. What kind of scanner do you have?

We have armed a few of our RMS customers with netbooks and usb scanners. It you have a solid wireless network you can run RMS on the netbooks and assign sections of the store to a given employee and have them count that section using the quick scan function in the PI screen. Our customers put these store sections on a by weekly count rotation and often times have more then one netbook and employee counting at the same time. This is a cheap and functional solution. A netbook (we used the asus

900 series) and a usb scanner can be bought for 400$ or so and they work much better then a 1500$ HHP dolphin or symbol, without having to buy an expensive windows mobile add on.

Good Luck

John
