This is not working for me. When I attempt to Sync to Outlook it complains that Outlook is not my default email client. Well DUH! It's not because it sucks and I prefer Thunderbird. But even if I set it as my default nothing appears to be different in Outlook. What's the deal?
Q2009 Sync to Outlook

Not sure I can help, but a little more info might help.
What specific steps have you taken to cause the "sync" to occur?
What version of Outlook do you use?
Did you exit Quicken (and possibly restart your pc) after making Outlook the default email client?
Sorry, not trying to hide my identity; the "No One You Know" moniker only occurs if I forget and create a reply to a message in the "news.motzarella.org" news server.
[I have several news servers because my ISP never keeps messages longer than 24 hours.]No One You Know wrote
Actually I don't really "use" Outlook at all. But I do "have" it. It reports it's 2003 SP3.
Of course not! That's silly!
That's a strangely operating news server there John.
So let's examine the current situation:
1) You acknowledge that you don't understand how sync works, but 2) You reject out of hand, without even trying (an effort that would take -- maybe -- 1 minute) a solution offered by one of the most experience Q users on this board.Question: WHY should anyone else even attempt to assist you on this, or any other, matter?

Actually I have an idea of how sync will work. It's just not working at the moment...
Yes, because of a number of factors. First off, it's highly unlikely that it'll work. It makes no sense that a reboot would be required. A change such as this should take effect immediately as there is really nothing that needs to be rebuilt only at boot time that could possibly relate to such a change. Indeed with Outlock not being my default mailer Quicken put up a dialog box stating as much. After making it my default mailer it didn't put up that dialog box so it's obvious that Quicken sensed the change. Secondly I actually use my computer for many things... Simultaneously (imagine that)!!! So having to suddenly reboot for such a minor configuration change is a real pain in the ass. Third, I run a lot of things at boot up and never reboot my computer unless it's absolutely necessary. My reboots are way longer than 1 minute I can assure you. Also, before John was "the most experience[sic] Q users on this board [actually newsgroup]" *I* was!
Requiring a reboot at the first sign of trouble is a silly, mostly Windows only mentality, usually offered by people who give up trying to find the actual problem but who instead just through a sledge hammer at the problem and is reminiscent of the tagline I once saw that went as follows "Windows had determined that you have change the position of your mouse cursor. Do you wish to reboot to affect the changes?".
Because the problem remains unsolved, others have experienced the problem, some have solutions and people like to help. Any other questions?
Why does Quicken want to sync with Outlook at all? Is that a new feature in Q2009? Is it an optional "feature" that can be turned off?
Not enough (at least not to get the reminders into Outlook ... it might work to remove them though).
You need to tell Quicken which of your Bills and Reminders you want synched with Outlook. You can do that by selecting them in the
Banking > Bill and Income Reminders List
clicking "Edit", and checking the "Sync to Outlook" box.
"Outlook 2003 SP3" was the only answer I needed.
I have Outlook 2002, and I have successfully synced to Outlook, so for now, I assume your Outlook version isn't the problem.
If you've not tried it, how could you know it's silly? [It's rhetorical, I'm not interested in the answer.]
Maybe not part of the solution to this particular problem, but not silly. One, or both steps, are sometimes recommended, and occasionally required for various applications ... sometimes the necessity is not published (or is obscurely published), and must be guessed.

Andrew, you spent WAY too much time addressing only half of what your comment about being "silly" referred to.
Exiting Quicken (and, I assumed you knew ... restarting Quicken) takes a very short time, and is sometimes required to cause changes to take effect.
Restarting Quicken may not be required after changing your default email client, but it's inexpensive to try.
Benefits from reboots may be much rarer ... but if I wanted something to work, none of the reasons in your lengthy reply would prevent me from, at some point, trying a reboot.
Strange wouldn't be my first choice of words: unfriendly would be closer to what I see. The limit isn't a mistake: it's their policy.
I don't have much choice, if I want high speed internet here. I can't get DSL, and I'm leary of the satellite service for internet. That leaves me with the only cable company serving my area ... and they are the worst company I've ever dealt with - for television or internet service (and they want me to sign up for phone service with them!).
I've not played with this too much but I believe it sync's you Quicken Calendar to Outlook and will only do so if the item on your calendar is flagged as such. I personally did not find it too useful.

If you "View" your Outlook Calendar by "Categories", you can easily find your Quicken reminders: they have an Outlook category of "Quicken Bill Reminder".
I already did this, a while ago...
Must I try pillow fights and sleepovers to determine that they are silly too? I think not. [It's rhetorical, I'm not interested in the answer.]
Actually I already explained my reasoning...
As a remedy for my problem, it's silly.
It's a sledge hammer approach that does not get at the root of the problem. If I had a nickel for every time a reboot was suggested and I followed that suggestion and it still didn't fix the problem I wouldn't need to go to work anymore!
I will determine where to spend my time, thank you very much. Additionally my "silly" comment was addressing the issue of rebooting - not restarting Quicken.
Yes but I was not talking about that.
We each have our reasons and rationals. Mine was stated. If you have a different set then wonderful. Still doesn't change my reasoning, reasons nor rational however...
I had a similar experience in Dallas with Time Warner. Couldn't get DSL
- had to deal with cable.
Now I have DSL and I'm about to jettison Cox Cable for TV service! Yup, as I told them "Bit torrent is gonna do to the cable companies what Napster did to the record companies". Why pay some $80/month to the cable company when I can use PlayOn with Hulu, CBS, CNN, Netflix and stream my entertainment to my PS3?
Huh? The days of non protected memory access and reaching into another programs memory space are at least 10 years old. And the "set" command? Surely you jest!
You're welcome my son! ;-)
Okay, fine. Still not useful to me as I don't use categories for calendar items (either at work or at home). I just prefer a simple one month view. Thank you for sharing the information. Quicken must have updated the help file at some point because when I was looking for sync several months ago, it was not mentioned.
