Quicken 2008 R2

Interestingly, even though there's currently no R2 listed for Quicken 2008 on Intuit's site, when I had the install routine check for updates, it downloaded an update. Help | About confirms I'm running R2. I have no idea what was changed over the production version.

The manual updates always lag the automatic downloaded updates; I can't give you a concrete figure, but I'm guessing it is between 1 and 7 days.

There are no bug fixes in R2, it only changes the security encryption from 512 to 2028.

And once you accept R2, you can not use a file created by R1.

Do you mean that the R2 does not upgrade files first created by R1? That does not seem logical. What about resurrecting a backup, made in R1?

I am now testing Q2007 on my laptop, prior to eventually purchasing Q2008. This behavior worries me, if it is like you seem to say, John!

I guess I didn't say it very well, sorry about that.

The first time you open a file with R2, that was created by R1, R2 will convert the file. After that, the R2 converted file can not be used with the R1 release.

When R2 does a conversion, it saves a backup of the R1 file. You can open, or restore, that R1 backup if you should revert to the R1 release.

You should re-read his message, you don't seem to have understood it.

Intuit's finally gotten the Q08 R2 update on their site. As John said, it's all about the encryption level. Here's the entire text from the Release Notes:

"Quicken 2008 Release 2 notes (September 2007):

File

  • In this update, Quicken data file security is improved through
2048-bit encryption. Because of the enhanced level of encryption, data files cannot be accessed with Quicken 2008 Release 1. Intuit recommends that Quicken users upgrade to Release 2 to ensure highest level of security protection."
