I moved my Q05 to a new laptop and when I went to update my accounts it asked me to register. I do not recall if I ever registered my Q on the old PC but maybe I did.
Can I avoid registering at all? If not, how do I find my registration info from my prior installation.
The "QWRS.DAT" file in the QUICKENW folder in Program Files holds your registration. When you transferred your Quicken files from your old computer to your new computer, be sure that you transferred this file. I had this problem with Q2002, but as soon as I transferred QWRS.DAT all was OK. I see that the QWRS.DAT file is in my updated Q2005. Not sure if this is your problem, but it's worth a quick check.
I donwloaded transactions just fine. It is just annoying to have the prompt to register popup everytime I open the program and I wish I could turn it off.
The only info you need to re-register is the username and e-mail account you used the first time. They will send you an e-mail message with the info, IIRC. No serial number is required or at least not with 2004.
With the Quicken program open, hold down the Ctrl + Shift keys on the keyboard, and go to the Online menu. From the Online menu choose One Step Update. After selecting One Step Update, with Ctrl + Shift still held down, you will receive a message that states, "You will no longer be prompted for registration." At this point registration is disabled and you will not receive any further messages regarding it. These instructions will work for Quicken 2003-2005. For Quicken 2001-2002 you will need to use the Finance menu instead of the Online menu. All other instructions are the same.
Don't worry about it...... Just enter the information and send it. If you worry about sending personal information, just enter bogus data (or enter George W. Bush at the White House). It doesn't check anything and once you enter the minimum data, you won't get prompted again (until you re-install again)....
