Epson TM-H6000II USB and drawer kick

The last store I setup had cash drawers with serial cables and the Epson TM-H6000II USB printer. It was easy to make the drawer pop using the OPOS configuration.

Now I have a store with cash drawers that have the little RJ11 connector that plugs into the DK (drawer kick) port on the back of this same printer model, the Epson TM-H6000II USB.

I cannot for the life of me find any instruction on how to get the drawer to pop. The tender types are set to pop the drawer. The OPOS devices are set for this printers MICR functionality, slip printing, and receipt receipt printing and they are working correctly.

The drawers did work with their old star impact receipt printer and a generic text printer driver.

I did attempt to add a cash drawer using the Epson OPOS program. I selected "Standard" then USB and even the two "Multi" selections, but all of them yield a communication error.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I have a little more info. I'll be posting until I resolve in case some one else ever has this issue.

My customer was using a Star SP300 impact receipt printer and an MMF Heritage 200 cash drawer. The cash drawer contains a 24V solenoid. The Star SP300 has a 24V output. The Star printer was using a generic text printer Windows driver.

My customer's new Epson TM-H6000II USB also has a draw kick port with a

24V output. The Epson is using an OPOS driver. Using Epsons control interface GUI I have added the printer's Printer function and MICR function. I have also added a cash drawer using the same GUI. I still cannot get the drawer to pop or the health check to return without an error.

I have found a string of Epson control characters for the MMF cash drawer that is supposed to make it pop. I will try that next. If it fails I will have to assume it's a different pin-out on each printer.

I have the Epson pin-out but cannot locate the Star's pin-out or the MMF cash drawer pin-out.

Update:

The MMF cash drawer is physically wired differently for a Star printer than for an Epson printer. I don't know why I assumed there was some type of standard just because most printers had a drawer kick port and they were all RJ11/12 connectors.

The solenoid in the cash drawer had two leads: red and black. Of the six conductors on the cable connecting the printer to the solenoid in the cash drawer, the red conductor connected to the red lead and the black conductor connected to the black lead. This configuration works for a Star printer.

For the Epson to work, the green conductor had to be connected to the black lead and the black conductor connected to the red lead. Now the drawer pops. One problem though. After the pop, there is a delay of

3-7 seconds before anything occurs.

Apparently, the OPOS drivers await a response from the cash drawer to determine if the drawer remains open or closed. The printer or OPOS driver waits until it times out before printing the receipt.

Looking at the Epson schematic for the drawer kick circuit, it is expecting pin 3 on the drawer kick port to be shorted to ground when the drawer is open (or shorted to ground when it is closed - I can't tell if the switch is normally opened or closed). Either way, I'm going to install a microswitch to perform the desired feedback, then may dealy problem should disappear.
