Item message pop up may cause missed scans at POS

I posted the following as a product suggestion at Microsoft Connect. I have re-posted it here to make everyone aware of the issue and to see if anyone has a work around.

MS should change the key needed to dismiss the pop up box used for Item Messages in RMS POS. Currently the Enter key will dismiss the message box. This presents a problem for any merchant scanning merchandise at the POS where the scanner is programmed to transmit an Enter with each scan. If a cashier does not look at the screen the following occurs; They scan an item with an associated item message. They hear a good read beep. A message box appears on the screen BUT if they do not look they scan the next item. Again they hear a good read beep. The message box clears and the last item they scanned does not get scanned in, instead the scan/enter only cleared the message box.

This behavior makes it very risky to use item messages, which otherwise can serve several valuable functions. I suggest a change to make it necessary to press the escape key (or similar) to clear the box.

Gill, I don't have any external speakers on the cash registers and have never heard alert sounds with the popup. Can you get a sound out of the PC speaker or should I get a small powered speaker for each cash register PC? Thank you for the suggestion - I will be using it. It's a safer bet than waiting for programming change, huh!
