Serial to USB adapter for OPOS

I am planning to install a new RMS lane and I'm finding most boxes on the market have only one serial port, but lots of USB ports.

Has anyone had any luck using serial-to-USB cables to connect peripherals to RMS using OPOS? If so, any advice or suggestions?

Thanks

Dhruva,

I would recommend against using the serial/USB adapters as it's one more variable that you are throwing into the mix. If I have serial devices I want them plugged into serial ports. I'd rather buy new USB peripherals than deal with the adapters.

However, if the convenience of the adapter makes it a "no-brainer" and you want to go with them, MAKE SURE that you locate and install the MOST RECENT drivers for the adapters. About 2 years ago there was a spate of bad drivers that may no longer be in the market but not worth messing with... find the new drivers. All the adapters that I've purchased in the past were capable of using the same driver, regardless of the manufacturer of the device.

Good luck!

I saw Brandon's reply...

But I sucessfully use USB to serial adapters for:

  1. ingenico eN-Touch 1000 signature capture
  2. VeriFone PINpad 100se

I have also tested it with, but don't use it for:

  1. PSC SL384 scanner scale

Of course your mileage may vary, and I typically turn off any USB power-saving features, but there is no reason to assume it won't work.

Hey Eric,

Yep, I am programattically opposed to using adapters. But in practice, as long as you use recent drivers, there's no reason that it won't work just fine.

My reasons to avoid adapters:

1: Troubleshooting is complicated by adapters. For instance, you call the location and they tell you they are having a problem with the device and you say "okay, look for the place on the back of the computer where the serial device plugs in... it's the one with two screws..." and there you go. Two hours later "AH! I forgot that one has an adapter on it..."

2: It is one more device to potentially turn against us and cause headaches or melt.

3: It's merely my drug-addled speculation that I've had more USB cards go bad than I've had serial cards go bad.

4: It's an excuse to buy yourself some new hardware that's not serialized.

I have every confidence that Dhruva will be just fine running an adapter.

I currently have a mess of PINpad1000's on adapters, I just won't do it if I can avoid it... but sometimes you can't!

Best wishes,

Brandon

All good points... It was while reading number 1 that reminded me to offer up these additional words of advice.

If you unplug a USB to serial adapter, be sure to plug it back into the exact same USB port... If you don't, a new COM port will be assigned. This is OK, as long as you remember to reconfigure your application, or go into the device's settings (via hardware manager) and (force) change the COM port back to what you want. In practice, it's just easier to do each POS exactly same (I make a little install diagram showing how each port should be used).
