Cash Drawer Won't Open

If the test button in the RMS Peripherals screen is greyed out then that is definately related to your problem. It indicates that either RMS does not think that you have enabled the cash drawer (which your earlier poasts say you have) or that RMS was not able to Claim the cash drawer when it started up. We use Epson printers pretty much exclusively (I have a few upgrade customers that had existing Star or Ithica printers). The only time I have seen problems getting the cash drawer recognized was when there was an error condition on the printer (usually out of paper).

You may want to try adjusting the pulse voltage for the cash drawer in EpsonOPOS utility - I've had to do that on AGP drawers before - but if it opens in the OPOS Utility it should open in RMS...

Here's a wild guess - check the cashier properties and make sure the cashier isn't set up to use Drawer 2...

Maybe try setting up Cash Drawer 2 to use the same drawer and see if that one gets activated in the peripherals test screen in RMS.

Good Luck!

Thank you for the suggestions.

As we were preparing to launch RMS we had been using register 1 (of 2) for testing purposes. This is the register at which the cash drawer does not open upon closing a transaction. During this time, because the store had been using register 2 (their front counter) running their old POS, we were unable to easily test that printer and cash drawer, both identical to those at register 1. As it turned out, when we launched, we discovered that the cash drawer at register 2 works as it should!

So now we're investigating the differences between the hardware at both registers. As you just confirmed, I suspected that the test button being greyed out in RMS Check Peripherals was significant.

Is the pulse voltage the High/Low selection in the OPOS device settings? If so, I did have to switch it from Low to High in order for the HealthCheck to pop the drawer open. I will try setting it up as cash drawer 2 to see whether the test button is greyed out or not. We'll also compare DIP switch settings, the cable and the drawers.

Mahalo!

We resolved this problem by reinstalling both the Epson OPOS and Store Ops. For what it's worth, the printer selection didn't matter, in fact it is set to a TM-U220A parallel. After reinstalling Store Ops, the Ctrl-Shift F5 peripheral check Test button for Cash Drawer 1 was no longer greyed out and the drawer now opens as it should.

Mahalo to everyone who helped!
